Allergies & Immunotherapy

Allergy Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

Dr. Emina Jasarevic, ND, offers Allergy Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) - a form of allergy treatment that is given under the tongue to desensitize the body from allergens. An allergy test can be scheduled following an initial consultation, provided in-office, revealing results of your seasonal allergies in approximately 20 minutes. For more specific Okanagan-related allergens, an in-office blood test is performed and results take 2-3 weeks.

An allergy occurs when the immune system is in overdrive with sensitivities and over-reacts to exposure from a normally harmless foreign substance, or allergen (i.e. cat dander, dust or plant pollen). Sublingual immunotherapy differs from 'allergy shots' in that there is a substantially lesser risk of anaphylaxis that accompanies the standard weekly injections. Pharmacy-compounded sublingual drops are an ideal option for children or adults averse to needles, or those with underlying medical conditions that prevent them from using injection therapy.

Pharmacy-compounded allergy drops are taken daily, over time, to help restore the body's tolerance to common allergens. With daily desensitization, sublingual immunotherapy is recognized as an effective treatment for allergies by the World Health Organization and is backed by over 60 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. Sublingual Immunotherapy has been used successfully in the treatment of allergies in Europe over the last 20+ years with an excellent safety profile.

Pharmacy-compounded formulas are available to treat a number of the most common allergens including:

  • Cats, Dogs, Mice
  • Ragweed
  • Dust Mites
  • Grass
  • Trees
  • Weeds
  • Moulds

Your drops are compounded to inculde your specific allergens identified by your test results. Because the formulation is pharmacy-compounded all allergens used in the making for SLIT Therapy are approved by Health Canada and the FDA.

Benefits of Immunotherapy for Allergies

While anti-histamines mask the symptoms of allergies, immunotherapy can train your body to tolerate the allergen, eventually eliminating allergy symptoms and the need for antihistamines or allergy medicines altogether. We invite you to book your consultation and allergy scratch test (or blood test) in early Spring or Fall, or at the onset of seasonal symptoms. The average treatment time is 12-24 months.
