Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture Treatments

Acupuncture has been proven to support the treatment of fertility, pain control, addictions, stress reduction, and to promote healing. The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognizes acupuncture as a treatment for over 40 medical conditions including: many pain syndromes such as sciatica/low back pain, headache, migraine, frozen shoulder, repetitive strain injury; as well as common colds, gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, and to help control appetite in weight loss.

Following initial consultation, a clinical assessment is made and acupuncture points are selected applying the TCM Meridian Theory. Naturopathic Doctors use acupuncture in combination with other naturopath therapies integrating traditional wisdom with current medical knowledge. Other naturopathic therapies can include auricular (ear) acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, massage, cold laser therapy, electrical stimulation and Chinese herbs.

Research has shown that certain effects of acupuncture are mediated through endogenous opioid peptides in the central nervous system, thereby reducing pain. For other conditions, acupuncture helps to invigorate the function of muscles, nerves, and internal organs through ‘reflex arcs’. By stimulating these reflex arcs, healing can occur through increased circulation, influencing the autonomic nervous system, regulating inflammation, and altering the excitability of cells.

Doctor Emina Jasarevic uses only stainless steel disposable needles so there is no risk of infection. The procedure is relatively painless and most patients find acupuncture treatments to be a relaxing experience. A typical acupuncture appointment usually lasts approximately 45 minutes.

History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture has developed over the last 4000 years as an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal substance in the body called Qi (pronounced “chee”) and it helps to bring about balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit.
