What Causes Migraines & Headaches?

Migraines are severe, recurring headaches that affect approximately 8.5% of Canadians.  Although researchers aren’t sure exactly what causes them, food triggers, nutrient deficiencies, stress, toxic exposures and genetic factors may all play a role.

Headaches can sometimes be triggered by food intolerances, such as reactions to yeast, eggs, dairy, sulphites, alcohol and caffeine.

Symptoms of migraines include throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head, nausea and vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and sound and increased pain during physical activity, or simply bending over. Some people also experience auras prior to the onset of a migraine. Auras are sensory disruptions before the onset of the headache and may include confusing sensations and visual disturbances such as seeing flashing lights, a narrowing visual field or zigzag lines. Migraines can last from several hours to several days in duration.

Although migraines can and may occur with no warning signs, the headaches can sometimes be triggered by:

  • Emotions like stress, anxiety, depression or shock
  • Changing hormone levels, such as fluctuations during menstruation
  • Consuming trigger foods or beverages such as food intolerances (yeast, eggs, dairy, sulphites, for example) or alcohol and caffeine.
  • Overexertion, poor sleep, low blood sugar and other physical issues
  • Environmental factors like flickering lights, loud noises and strong odours
  • Toxic Exposures such as from mold, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals or other chemical pollutants

Fight Migraines & Headaches with an IV Myers Cocktail

Severe migraines or headaches can be debilitating, but treatment can include strategies to both prevent migraines & headaches and cope with the symptoms. We help patients currently experiencing migraine symptoms by providing IV therapy. We assess your symptoms, take your vital signs and recommend an IV push or drip appropriate for the situation.

In most cases, we recommend our IV Myers Cocktail push or IV Myers Cocktail Drip with added nutrients for patients combating severe headache and migraine symptoms. This saline solution includes the following ingredients known to help with migraine symptoms:

  • Vitamin B complex and B12: Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins have been shown to reduce the severity of migraine with aura, and vitamin B12 supplements are commonly used to prevent migraine attacks.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium sulfate administered intravenously has successfully treated patients who have migraine with aura. In migraine patients without aura, magnesium did not reduce pain or nausea, but it did decrease sensitivity to light and sound. Magnesium can also prevent the onset of migraines when it’s taken regularly.

IV Myers’ Cocktail Ingredients Explained

The Myers’ cocktail contains six different vitamins and minerals essential for health and wellness. Each ingredient in this IV fluid addresses certain symptoms and needs:

  • Saline:Each IV contains saline which is essentially sterile saltwater. The saline delivers the rest of the nutrients to the body and replenishes fluids and electrolytes, which is ideal for addressing dehydration.
  • Vitamin B12: This vitamin can help maintain blood cell and nerve health. Vitamin B12 can also help reduce fatigue and relieve migraine symptoms.
  • Vitamin B complex: These vitamins, including vitamin B6, riboflavin and folic acid, play a crucial role in cell metabolism and energy production, making them valuable for addressing fatigue.
  • Vitamin C: Most people know vitamin C for its important role in the immune system. What many don’t know is that it also relates to muscle, bone and blood vessel health. Whether you’re fighting a cold or recovering after an athletic event, vitamin C could aid in the healing process.
  • Zinc: This vital mineral helps the body resist infection and repair damaged tissue.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium supports the heart and circulatory system. It’s also used to prevent migraine attacks and lessen migraine symptoms.

Migraines and headaches don’t have to get in the way of you enjoying your life. A short series of IV therapy for migraines could help you get fast relief from symptoms and prevent recurrence long term.
